Freshmen of the University of Calabar have been charged to be highly disciplined to meet academic challenges of the Institution.
The charge was given by the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof James Epoke while addressing the new entrants at the 2012/2013 Freshmen Orientation which was recently held at the University of Calabar International Conference Centre.
He welcomed them to the citadel of learning urging them to be very
disciplined and studious as they were lucky to be admitted amongst the
4,000 out of the 22, 380 applicants who applied for admission into the
Institution.
The Vice chancellor said their primary aim here is education that what they will experience here will be entirely different from what they have been used to.
Prof. Epoke warned them against joining groups that are prohibited by the Institution especially secret cult as the authority will not condone cultism.
The Registrar of the Institution, Dr (Mrs.) Julia Omang in her paper presentation titled "University Policies, Rules and Students Discipline" said customarily the Institution brings together new entrants fondly called freshmen to give them an orientation on University Policies, Rules and students Discipline.
Dr Omang said that this is intended to acquaint every new student with the whole range of services and privileges available to him/her as well as responsibilities of each member of an academic community.
The Registrar informed the new entrants that the University award its certificate, diploma and Degrees to students who are "Worthy in character and learning" adding that failure to meet these requirements, the students will be given the ominous advice to withdraw as he/she cannot graduate.
She encourage them to achieve a certain percentage of total class attendance and decried sensual pursuit as this will cause them the opportunity of not receiving the lecture first hand.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. James Utsalo in his paper presentation titled "University administration, channel of communication and student's welfare" implored the freshmen to get themselves acquainted with the pattern of relationship between units, authority levels and reporting relationships according to hierarchical order, the central administration which devolves on the Vice chancellor and occasionally the burden of which is shared by the Deputy Vice Chancellor.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor advised them to be focused as on their first arrival on campus they will be struck by the serene ambience of academic environment which if not managed properly may make or mar them.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof. Austin Obiekezie, in a Power Point presentation titled "Consequences of Examination Misconduct and Allied Offences" said misconduct ranges from communication with another student in examination room, giraffing, possession of extraneous material consequences suspension for one academic session copying in Examination from extraneous material and possession of phones in exam Hall
Also at the Orientation, the newly appointed Librarian, Dr (Mrs.) Ruth Bassey appealed to the students to inculcate the spirit of library usage as this will help them to escape Examination malpractice and other misconduct.
Dr Bassey said library infrastructure is important to support educational activities both in learning, teaching and research of the Institution adding that the library provides resource materials for both teacher and students.
The Librarian stressed that the key role of library is to provide current information via digital technology and effective information management.
The University Librarian urged them to take pains and get familiar with library roles and also register to have access to resource material as registration is of no cost.
In the same vein, the Bursar, Mr. Obot Nsebot, who was represented by Mrs. Yeside Morenike, Head of Students Account Unit, advised the students to pay their charges to the appropriate quarters as the consequences of charges evasion is very disastrous.
The Chief Security Officer, Mr. Boniface Adie reiterated the Security Unit preparedness to combat any act of misconduct emanating from the students and appealed to the students to be law abiding as security personnel are their friends and not enemies.
President Unical Alumni, Hon Kenneth Dike commended the freshmen for making Unical their preferred choice as the Institution will help shape their future and aid them in the realization of their dreams. Hon Dike appeal to them to define their focus, committed to their studies and with positive agendas of the Institution.
In his vote of thanks, the Dean of Students' Affairs Division, Prof, Eyong Ubana Eyong said the knowledge the Institution will impart to the freshmen is for them to use in serving Nigeria and the world at large.
He urged them to relate well with their lecturers, academic advisers and exploit the Counseling unit of Students Affairs.
